Here’s my christmas present for all of you!

Version 1.3 of Shorten2Ping is available for download…

The following changes have been made in Shorten2Ping 1.3:

Added a function to remove the new wp.me shortlink creation functions present in Wordpress.com stats plugin (if you’re using Shorten2Ping you dont need support for wp.me short links).
Improved Facebook support: Now if you upload and insert an image in your post, Shorten2Ping will add the needed tag in your post code to tell Facebook to take this image for the preview and not the first image in your page’s code like used to be before. If you want to force the use of an image, you can add a new custom field to the post named ‘fb_img‘ and put the full URL to the image in the value for this custom field.
Added function to remove HTML tags (if any) from post titles before sending notifications.
Updated compatibility tag to WordPress 2.9.

Es una pena que en España la gran mayoría de empresas siga pensando que moverse en Twitter o Facebook no les va a reportar beneficios, o que sigan confundiendo la figura del social media manager con la del webmaster de toda la vida.

Shorten2Ping 1.2.8 released…

Version 1.2.8 of Shorten2Ping is available for download since some hours ago…

The following changes have been made in Shorten2Ping 1.2.8:

Finally fixed html entities in title when using Ping.fm to notify new posts (not happened with Twitter). The fix consists in using $post->the_title instead of get_the_title($post_id), so not really a Shorten2Ping’s bug but different output for two WP functions that should do the same.
Improved options page. Now looks better and it’s XHTML valid code
Updated locale file (.pot) and es_ES translation to reflect some changes in options page.

UPDATED: It seems that when uploading changes to SVN the version number was messed up, so I was needed to force again to update the plugin. I’m sorry about the two updates in one day.

Twitter en español ya disponible

Ahora sí, Twitter en español ya está disponible para todos los usuarios. Así nos lo anunciaba hace escasos minutos en la lista de traductores Nieves Montero, la enlace de Twitter para el equipo de traducción al español:

Hola a todos:
Tenemos el placer de informaros de que por fin hemos lanzado la versión en español.
La podeis ver cambiando la configuración del idioma en vuestras cuentas.
Todavía queda mucho trabajo que hacer y ya somos conscientes de algunas cosillas
que hay que arreglar, pero el resultado hoy por hoy es realmente bueno.
¡Enhorabuena a todos por el trabajo tan fantástico que habéis hecho!
Podéis si queréis, enviar los bugs o errores que veais, pero tened paciencia,
todavía queda mucho por hacer!

La verdad es que a mí me ha pillado por sorpresa, porque hace escasos 5 días comentaba en el blog de analiZe que estaba disponible la traducción de Twitter para probar por el equipo de traductores. Y creo que quizás ha sido un lanzamiento un poco precipitado, pero supongo que hay mucha gente deseando poder usar Twitter en español y eso puede más que corregir todos los fallos antes de publicar la traducción

En cualquier caso, durante el tiempo que he podido dedicar a colaborar en la traducción (que no ha sido todo el que hubiera querido), he podido comprobar que Nieves es una persona con muy buen criterio en la traducción. Por lo que no me cabe duda de que pasado un tiempo prudencial acabaremos teniendo una muy buena traducción de Twitter.

Changed checking user level (number based) to checking capabilities for the options page.
Added YOURLS shortener support.
Added Su.pr shortener support. (User requested feature).
Added ‘linktext’ parameter to short_permalink() theme tag. Now you can choose between using short link as text for the link or use the “Short URL” text (default behaviour). (User requested feature).
Added ‘Self domain’ option for shortened permalinks. If you domain is short enough for you, this will not use any shortener service, but instead will use the post ID (default WP permalinks).
Added settings link on plugins page.
Fixed bug in Su.pr support (thanks to Brad for reporting it!).

Shorten2Ping 1.2 bug and fix

If you was one of the new Shorten2Ping users that installed 1.2 version for first time (this bug has no effect on upgrades, only new users), maybe you removed it after having problems saving the plugin configuration.

And maybe you tried again when I released the 1.2.1 version… but you had the same problem

That was because 1.2 creates a blank Shorten2Ping options in your WordPress database, and it needs to be deleted. So if you have Shorten2Ping 1.2.1 installed and cant save options, you can fix it manually, simply doing this:

Deactivate Shorten2Ping from the plugins menu.
Use PhpMyadmin to go to your wp_options table.
Remove shorten2ping_options.
Activate the plugin again.

But even better!!, you can install (or upgrade) Shorten2Ping 1.2.2 and this new plugin version will do the job for you.

Tr.im is closing down

I have just noticed that Tr.im, my favourite url shortener service is closing down forever

It seems that this is due the lack of support (money) and Twitter movement to set bit.ly as default url shortener.

And finally, Twitter has all but sapped us of any last energy to double-down and develop tr.im further. What is the point? With bit.ly the Twitter default, and with us having no inside connection to Twitter, tr.im will lose over the the long-run no matter how good it may or may not be at this moment, or in the future.

By the way… if you use my plugin, Shorten2Ping, remember to change your settings and choose bit.ly if you want to continue using shortened urls.

Shorten2Ping 1.1.3 released

Version 1.1.2 of Shorten2Ping is available for download.

The following changes are made to this version:

Removed adding and checking of post meta data ‘pinged = yes’. That was not needed since changes on 1.1.1.
Added ‘both’ option by user request to make possible to send notifications to both services (Ping.fm and Twitter) at once.
Fixed typo that may cause users with no admin level to access to the options page. (Thanks to David Jack Wange Olrik for reporting the issue.)
