Shorten2Ping will not support OAuth

Tomorrow is the deadline set by Twitter to stop allowing any other auth method than OAuth for third party apps, that includes WordPress plugins like Shorten2Ping.

I’m not familiarized with OAuth, and at present I don’t have time nor any motivation to add support for OAuth in Shorten2Ping, this plugin is only a personal project that I share with you all and I’m fine using a Ping.fm account to spread my blog’s updates.

I think that the 99% of Shorten2Ping users are using a Ping.fm account to make the updates, so this notice will be not a problem for they. If you are one of the 1% that are using the direct Twitter update with my plugin, I’m so sorry, but I’m sure that you’ll find any other Twitter WordPress plugin that will fit your needs.

If you want to continue using Shorten2Ping and don’t have already a Ping.fm account, simply create one :) it’s free, easy, and very useful.

Anyway, if any developer wants to contribute to Shorten2Ping adding OAuth support, I’ll be pleased to merge it in the official release and credit him (or her ;) ) for the contribution.

Convertir entradas a tipos personalizados

Una de las nuevas características más esperadas de WordPress 3.0 ha sido el hecho de poder crear tipos de entradas personalizadas (custom post types), con su propio juego de taxonomías. Dando así la posibilidad de crear contenidos claramente diferenciados de los habituales.

Esto desde luego representa una ampliación de usos posibles para WordPress y para el que empieza desde cero con la versión 3.0 no supone más que ventajas. ¿Pero y qué pasa si ya tenemos nuestro WordPress lleno de contenido que nos gustaría convertir a entradas personalizadas?.

Para esos casos, tenemos dos opciones en forma de extensiones de WordPress.

Post Type Switcher añadirá a la pantalla de edición de la entrada una nueva sección, situada por encima del bloque de publicación, donde podremos convertir una página en entrada, una entrada en página, una entrada en cualquier tipo de entrada personalizada, etc… Simplemente seleccionando el tipo al que queremos convertir la entrada/página y guardando cambios.

Dada la interfaz de esta extensión, es evidente que sólo nos servirá si son pocas las entradas a las que les queremos cambiar el tipo. Ya que tenemos que ir una a una.

Convert Post Types por otro lado está pensaba para el cambio masivo del tipo de entrada. Esta extensión añadirá una opción nueva al menú herramientas de nuestro WordPress y nos permitirá cambiar categorías enteras de entradas, convirtiéndolas a los nuevos tipos entrada que seleccionemos (se pueden elegir varios simultáneamente) e incluso añadirles si queremos determinadas etiquetas, que se sumarán a las ya existentes en cada entrada.

Además de estas extensiones, se pueden encontrar ya muchas otras para aprovechar los “custom post types“, basta con buscar por esa misma frase en el directorio de extensiones de WordPress.

Añade canciones de Spotify a tu blog

Ahora que el servicio de música online Spotify está volcándose en convertirse en un componente más de las redes sociales como Facebook o Twitter (redes con las que está actualmente integrado). Los desarrolladores de extensiones de WordPress no han pasado por alto dicho movimiento.

Spotify en WordPress

Fruto de ello es la extensión WP-Spotify de David Hermansson, que permite la inserción de canciones de Spotify en blogs de WordPress.

Por el momento WP-Spotify sólo permite hacerlo con canciones “sueltas”, no con álbumes o artistas.

El uso de esta extensión de Spotify para WordPress es bastante sencillo, si quieres insertar una canción de tu gusto en una entrada de tu blog, sólo tienes que seguir los siguientes pasos (una vez hayas instalado y activado la extensión, claro):

En Spotify (en el programa), haz clic con el botón derecho del ratón sobre la canción que quieres compartir en tu blog y escoge la opción “Copiar URI de Spotify“.
Pulsa en la pestaña HTML de tu editor de WordPress y sitúa el cursor en el lugar donde quieres que se inserte el recuadro con los detalles de la canción (lo aconsejable sería situar el curso en una línea vacía).
Pulsa el botón derecho del ratón y escoge “Pegar” (o pulsa CTRL+V) y verás algo como spotify:track:7e65gHts9ZB8AuxhcHZTp1
Lo único que tienes que hacer para que WP-Spotify haga su trabajo es añadir corchetes de apertura y cierre a dicho texto, de manera que quede así [spotify:track:7e65gHts9ZB8AuxhcHZTp1]

Y esto es todo amigos :) si has seguido correctamente las instrucciones, verás en la entrada donde has insertado el código de la canción un recuadro como el de imagen que acompaña a este artículo. (Nota: La URI de Spotify usada en el ejemplo es real y corresponde a la canción que se muestra en la imagen).

Shorten2Ping 1.4.1 released

Added j.mp shortener support.

Added Traditional Chinese translation (zh_TW) , thanks to Pseric.
Updated spanish (es_ES) translation.
Improved Facebook Thumbnail support. Now uses the new post thumbnail function if available and thumbnail was defined in the post by the user. If not, uses the first attached image or the one the user sets using fb_thumb custom field (like previous version).
Changed su.pr function to use CURL instead of fopen.
Changed from rel=”short_url” to rel=”shortlink”. So now uses the same like wp.me
Improved settings handling using WP API for settings.
Fixed removing of the ‘Get shorlink’ button if (WP) stats plugin is active.

You can install it from your WordPress dashboard or download Shorten2Ping from WordPress extend directory and install it manually. If you do it manually, remember to deactivate and activate the plugin before use new version.

The following changes have been made in Shorten2Ping 1.3:

Added a function to remove the new wp.me shortlink creation functions present in WordPress.com stats plugin (if you’re using Shorten2Ping you dont need support for wp.me short links).
Improved Facebook support: Now if you upload and insert an image in your post, Shorten2Ping will add the needed tag in your post code to tell Facebook to take this image for the preview and not the first image in your page’s code like used to be before. If you want to force the use of an image, you can add a new custom field to the post named ‘fb_img‘ and put the full URL to the image in the value for this custom field.
Added function to remove HTML tags (if any) from post titles before sending notifications.
Updated compatibility tag to WordPress 2.9.

The following changes have been made in Shorten2Ping 1.2.8:

Finally fixed html entities in title when using Ping.fm to notify new posts (not happened with Twitter). The fix consists in using $post->the_title instead of get_the_title($post_id), so not really a Shorten2Ping’s bug but different output for two WP functions that should do the same.
Improved options page. Now looks better and it’s XHTML valid code :)
Updated locale file (.pot) and es_ES translation to reflect some changes in options page.

Shorten2Ping 1.2 bug and fix

If you was one of the new Shorten2Ping users that installed 1.2 version for first time (this bug has no effect on upgrades, only new users), maybe you removed it after having problems saving the plugin configuration.

And maybe you tried again when I released the 1.2.1 version… but you had the same problem :(

That was because 1.2 creates a blank Shorten2Ping options in your WordPress database, and it needs to be deleted. So if you have Shorten2Ping 1.2.1 installed and cant save options, you can fix it manually, simply doing this:

Deactivate Shorten2Ping from the plugins menu.
Use PhpMyadmin to go to your wp_options table.
Remove shorten2ping_options.
Activate the plugin again.

But even better!!, you can install (or upgrade) Shorten2Ping 1.2.2 and this new plugin version will do the job for you.

Activar Google Chrome Frame en WordPress

Seguramente ya hayáis oído hablar de Google Chrome Frame, ese nuevo invento de Google para intentar sobre todo que los usuarios que todavía navegan con Internet Explorer (sobre todo la versión 6) usen el motor de renderizado de Google Chrome para ver las páginas web.

Pero para que eso ocurra, no sólo deben instalar Google Chrome Frame los usuarios de Internet Explorer, los desarrolladores web también tenemos que activar este sistema en nuestras webs. Cosa que no entiendo muy bien a que se debe… y además hará inservible a Google Chrome Frame en infinidad de páginas web que seguro no van a añadir el código necesario para que funcione… (gobiernos, la mayoría de empresas, etc… ).

En fin, en cualquier caso, si usas WordPress lo tienes fácil (como siempre). Sólo tienes que instalar la extensión Google Chrome Frame for WordPress y podrás hacer dos cosas:

Añadir la etiqueta meta necesaria para permitir que los usuarios de Google Chrome Frame puedan usarlo en tu web.
Añadir el archivo javascript que invita a los usuarios a instalar Google Chrome Frame en Internet Explorer.

No obstante, si quieres hacerlo “a mano”, puedes consultar la guía para desarrolladores de Google Chorme Frame, donde se explica como hacer lo anterior por tu cuenta y riesgo.
